College Campus Outreach Initiative

PREVENTION EDUCATION

The lifetime risk of cancer among the under-30 generation is now approaching one in two!  According to the World Health Organization, up to 75% of these cancers are diet and lifestyle related. Through our College Campus Outreach Initiative, we are partnering with sororities, fraternities, and other campus organizations.  We deliver nutrition and prevention talks, provide free educational materials, and train students to share this information with their peers and in their communities.  Having begun with campuses in the local Philadelphia area, (LaSalle, St. Joseph's, Drexel, and Philadelphia universities), we hope to expand our partnerships to other campuses and bring our empowering cancer prevention message to college campuses nationwide.

Besides health and nutrition education, another important way we relate to students is through fostering volunteerism.  Therefore, other aspects of our college outreach program include student internships, student-sponsored fundraising projects, and other volunteer opportunities.

                     FUNDRAISING/AWARENESS PROJECTS

RACE for CACEA Beat Cancer "Prevent-Event" is a concept that can be hosted by one person or by a group of people in a team oriented environment. The event can take place anywhere, in any season, for any reason, with any sport. Participants race for a reason or ride for a reason or run for a reason and raise money through their personal networks online. All proceeds benefit the cancer prevention programs of BeatCancer.org. Check out our fundraising home page at http://www.firstgiving.com/beatcancer.

PUSH-UP for PREVENTION and PEDAL for PREVENTION are two types of events in which individuals or teams create their own charitable fundraising page on Firstgiving.com. Then they send out emails to their network requesting that their supporters contribute online whatever dollar amount they wish per pushup or per hour or make a general donation to show support.

APPLES for PREVENTION is a campaign in which we give the old adage "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" a new twist: research says a daily apple also helps keep cancer away. Students encourage anyone they encounter to "buy" a paper apple for any donation, in exchange for which they get their name on an apple which gets posted in the dorm, frat house, recreation center or student center for the duration of the campaign.

CREATE YOUR OWN PREVENT-EVENT by organizing a carwash, musical event, bake sale, fashion show, etc.

                                  VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

If you cannot commit to helping with one of the campaigns above, then give a day, a few hours per week, or a few hours per month.  For more information, email MFiorello@BeatCancer.org or call 610-642-4810.
